I love bending the rules

I ran across some bookstore gift cards recently and decided to treat myself to a few sewing books. Amy Karol’s Bend the Rules Sewing is a wonderful book and is just what I needed to get my creative juices flowing again. Most significantly, it’s inspired me to pick my my embroidery needle and doodle all over my fabric.

Here are a couple of “Artsy Clutches” – a simple envelope folded over and secured with a button. The pattern calls for flannel as interfacing, but I didn’t have any plain flannel so I used lightweight iron-on interfacing and I think the weight is perfect.

Toast clutch

I made this one for a coworker and just gave it to her this morning. She loved it, which makes me very happy.

And some doodling…I mean, don’t those shapes look like toast to you? It’s goofy, but I like it.

Pink & black artsy clutch - unfinished

And for me, pink and black. I’m not sure what to do about the button/elastic. The button I have is too small for such a big elastic loop. So I can re-do the elastic (pain in the rear) or find a new button (pain in the rear because getting to the fabric store is never easy these days). But I love pink and black together and I’ve had the black and white fabric forever. I still have tons of it but it was good to finally use a little.
