Lillies of the Valley

Lillies of the Valley, originally uploaded by ally.o.

When I was growing up we had a little patch of these on the side of the house where we rarely went and nothing else really grew. I loved “finding” them again and again each spring. They don’t last long but the small white buds are fragrant and even a tiny vase makes the house smell delightful.

When we bought this house we found a similar patch in a corner in the back yard where again, nothing else really grew. A year later I transplanted them to the front yard because we had a new puppy and they’re poisonous to puppys and small children. I transplanted two small bundles and they’ve taken to their new location well, spreading across both beds a little more every year.

I love Lilies of the Valley. They used to grow abundantly on the north side of our neighbor’s house, right next to our driveway. I can see them in my mind now.

I planted some in CT, but they don’t grow well in Red Clay state I think. It’s too warm.
