Book report

Recently our book before bed routine has changed. Jamie insists on reading the books to me instead of the other way around. It’s gratifying to see him reading Brown Bear Brown Bear (well, pointing out the pictures) after months and months of "Jamie, what is that? What color is it? What does it say?" Especially on the last page where he will now go through and name each animal.

I worked in my aunt’s kids’ bookstore for years and its so much fun to see all those books I recommended to families being put to use in our own house. Some of our current favorites:

  • Brown Bear Brown Bear
  • The gosling books – Boo Boo, Ollie etc., by Oliver Dunrea (Jamie has just taken to these, after months of refusing to look at them)
  • Five Little Monkeys Jumping on the Bed – Eileen Christletow (same as above)
  • In the Tall Tall Grass – Denise Fleming
  • If You Give a Pig a Pancake – Numeroff/Bond (this is my least favorite in this series, but I had it lying around – this is another recent favorite)
  • Bear Snores On, Bear Wants More – Wilson/Chapman

All but the two I singled out have been favorites for ages but are ones that he’s enjoying on a whole new level. Of the new favorites, the books by Dunrea and Pig/Pancake have similar illustration styles. Less bright colors than someone like Carle with more defined outlines. All of a sudden he’s taken to this style.

And speaking of Jamie, he has a cold and is waking up. Bye!

    Way to go Jamie!

I’m going to look for Bear Snores this morning. There is a bookstore in Brookline that often has great remainders in the children’s section. We may need to head that way when you’re in town. 🙂
